Pyongyang Un-like

„Pyongyang Un-like“ - An installation by 3FOUR inspired by the Pyongyang metro.

From 1996 to 1998 the Pyongyang Metro authorities bought discarded Berlin subway cars from Germany which run with unmodified interior in the capital of North Korea. The only thing the authorities added are the portraits of Kim Il-sung (“The Great Leader”) and Kim Jong-il (“The Dear Leader”). Despite the prohibition of taking photos David Guttenfelder managed to take a picture of the inside of a Pyongyang subway car.

The installation is a reproduction of Guttenfelders photo in the Berlin subway of today. Additionally it shows Kim Jong-un, the son of Kim Jong-il who is currently seizing power after his fathers death.

"A group of Guerilla Knitters which I am part of have recently (31 January to be precise) stormed the U1 in Berlin disguised with knitted beards and armed with knitted cozies, to beautify and soften the harsh interior of the everyday world of commuters. After 3 months of preparation with my Stitch N Bitch group, it took us just an hour to install, and the carriage stayed in circulation until around 15:00, when the BVG security unfortunately cut it all to pieces. Despite making those few employees miserable by giving them extra work, I think we cheered up a fair amount of weary travellers on a gloomy January day!"

"Earlier today I got a message from a certain Ishknits yarn bombing artist telling me that she was heading out this afternoon to bomb SEPTA’s Blue Line and invited me to tag along to photograph it all for this blog. Needless to say I hopped right on the El, and from 15th street to 69th street and then back to the Dolphin street stop, she installed 3 pieces on 3 different trains. And even while we started on a near empty train by the end it was the beginning of rush hour and the train was packed, all the people on each train we very excited about the work.”

today for the first time i show 3 dimensional stuff. it s really rare to find outside on trains , but some artists try it at least. above PIANO33 , FLUFL & MEWE realized this work in 2007 via ekosystem and below a work by Shlomo Faber - back in 2002 still doing Styles - but real 3D via .
