FreightTrainWorks - Publication

The publication „FreightTrainWorks“ documents the exhibition project of the same name. In 2017, the exhibition was curated by Jens Besser in Dresden.
The exhibition presented artistic positions that realized abstract, figurative and conceptual works on surfaces of freight trains.
In the publication FreightTrainWorks numerous photos and English texts on artist groups are published for the first time. An introduction to the history of freight train painting provides valuable information. A glossary explains the most important terms.

With texts by J. Besser (DE), R. Kaltenhäuser (DE) and P. Rivasi (IT).

Interviews were hold with The Funky Diabetic (US) and Zelle Asphaltkultur (DE) by Jens Besser and published in the publication.

Martha Cooper & Henry Chalfant

Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant talk about taking pictures of painted MTA cars in the 80's. One of the main things that changed , is that nowadays trainpainters are able to take own pictures - they don't need to call a photographer. But there are still lot's of people out that take pictures of trains, because they just like the works. An important fact police doesn't realize till today. The police and train company workers still stop people and ask for their identity cards or chase people without reason. That's why lot's of people are scared of taking pictures, even it's not forbidden at all. Found via 1just

Back in the days - FUTURA 2000

This train of FUTURA 2000 is one of my most favorites. It s done in the 80's and looks like some all-over painting

"That piece was a total departure from anything previous. I understood that I could do other things with spray paint and I wanted to experiment. The result was that car and two others in different colors. I was lucky to have (SEEN) catch that one, with the windows up because the others all got buffed or dogged. I had always thought of myself as a writer, tagging insides and other highly visible locales. But the transition to painting outsides and let's say, whole cars was obviously the move. I'm just lucky, I was even there. I really can't explain the mystery. Suffice to say I have had a nice little run." this comment of Futura via graffiti.org

I heared Futura painted this abstract painting because he wasn't able to paint styles at that time. He just came back from the army and was not part of the jump between tag to style. That's why you find a huge tag in the middle. The rest of the car is just fancy colored - would like to know if that s true or not ... but for sure i love this work.

Steel Tattoos by Won aka New

Won aka New made a series of great Trainworks in early 90s on munich S-train. His "Steel Tattoos" been published in books like "Graffiti Munich" or "Action Painting". He is a pioneer in painting on trains in non writing context and for sure these works are one of my favorite works on trains.

"schöner Reisen" means " more beautiful travelling"

This work was done in Berlin - 1998 via

" The idea was by IXEL. At every station youngstes enter the s-train and brought individual stuff into the train. Pictures, carpets, fridges, garden funiture was brought to costumize the interieur of the impersonal S-trains.
After a few Stations it was maybe the first "Berlin Graffiti Ready -made". The Traincompany doesn't understand this project , that's why the train was taken off-line at Hermannstrasse."

"Die Idee zu dieser Aktion hatte IXEL, das Konzept war jede Station/ pro Wagon steigen mehrere interessierte Südostberliner Jugendliche zu, angefangen in Königs Wusterhausen. Das nicht sonderlich ansprechende unpersönliche Interieur der S-Bahn sollte individualisiert und mit persönlichen Gegenständen, wie Bildern, gebrauchten Kühlschränken, Teppichen, Gartenmöbeln oder -Erde etc aufgewertet werden.
Somit war bereits nach mehreren Stationen ein Vollzug zum vielleicht ersten Berliner Graffiti Ready-made umgewandelt. Die Bahn verstand das Konzept damals noch nicht und nahm den Zug Hermannstrasse aus dem Verkehr."
